Course Overview: Students in this course will apply learning theories and language acquisition theories to the process of developing curriculum and instructional materials in mother tongue based multilingual education (formal education system) in non-dominant language communities. The following topics will be covered:
1. Curriculum and instructional plans that enable students in MTB MLE programs to achieve government competencies
2. Teaching and learning materials that support concept attainment and language acquisition
3. Assessment tools appropriate to MTB MLE primary grades
4. Essential components of teacher training for MTB MLE

EthnoArts and Multilingual Education: Research Methods and Applied Techniques, 15 – 26 November 2010
Course facilitators: Todd and Mary Beth Saurman
This two week training explores appropriate ways to integrate culturally relevant ethnic art forms into MLE and literacy programs. EthnoArts include songs, poems, dance, drama, verbal arts, and visual arts. The participants will learn research techniques and how to adapt the research data for use as teaching tools in the education curriculum. They will see how this can be effective in increasing community stakeholders in the MLE and literacy program.

Optional Practicum, 29 November – 3 December 2010
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a optional practicum. This would involve observing and possibly helping out (depending on the language of the participants) in a Materials Development Workshop for Mother Tongue Language Teaching Materials for Kindergarten level.
This will take place immediately following the Music and Arts module and will last for 7 days from the 22nd through the 30th of November.
Fee: The fee to observe/help will be 500 baht unless the workshop takes place outside of Chiang Mai and involves extra travel and lodging expenses. This opportunity will be limited to 8 students.
